All Purpose Cultural Catgirl Nuku Nuku TV
Genre(s):  Comedy, School
Released:  1998
Episodes:  14 TV

Once a cat, Nuku Nuku was turned into an android by the scientist Kyusaku in an attempt to defeat his rival, the president of Mishima Industries, once and for all. However, it's taking a lot longer than expected for Nuku Nuku to become more humanlike, so she has assumed the name of Atsuko and has begun attending high school in order to learn how to be more human.

More of an "alternate universe" of sorts than any sort of sequel to the original All Purpose Cultural Catgirl Nuku Nuku OVA series, Nuku Nuku TV didn't turn out quite as I had expected. I went into it thinking it was going to be like the OVA: a comedy series with a dose of story and drama. Much to my disappointment, I realized that this TV series is just "comedy", and I use that term lightly in this situation.

Let me say this straight away: if it weren't for Hayashibara Megumi as Nuku Nuku, the show would have gone nowhere fast. Her voice acting talent went above and beyond my already very high expectations for her in this series, and it was because of her that this series managed to pass the 2.5 rating of doom.

However, as you all know, one good character does not make a good anime series. No, a series needs a good supporting cast with good voice actors. Unfortunately, Nuku Nuku TV has neither. Included in this TV series are quite possibly the worst excuses for a supporting cast of characters that I've ever seen. Yes, I know that they were probably going for a parody of cliché high school anime archetypes, but that doesn't make them GOOD. Besides the usual Nuku Nuku cast of Ryunosuke, Kyusaku, Akiko, and that annoyingly sarcastic girl that follows Ryunosuke around in the OVA series, we have many additions. There's some guy who is calm, cool, and handsome, another guy who is always singing (really bad singing, might I add), a scientist, a fortune-teller, a girl who is always reading and only speaks in one episode, the class representative who is ALWAYS blowing a whistle, the rich girl who has that really annoying, high pitched laugh that evil snobbish anime women have (you know what I'm talking about), and of course, a teacher that gets injured in every episode.

And they all stink.

I'll give them some credit, though. It was funny when they were first introduced, but then they appear in every single episode, and they do the same exact thing in every episode. This anime is also about as episodic as they come. Each episode is completely cut off from the rest, and they don't seem to follow any particular timeline. Of course, this also means that there's no story, and no story means no ending, and no ending means I get angry... and you wouldn't like me when I'm angry. Normally, I wouldn't complain at all about story in a comedy series. However, when a comedy series has terrible jokes, it needs SOMETHING to fall back on. It doesn't help that EVERY joke is reused in almost every episode. I'm really not kidding. Every single joke. Whether it's Nuku Nuku mispronounciation the rich girl's name (Shirakaba) or their teacher getting injured, it's repeated.

Fortunately, there were some jokes that, despite being reused every episode, maintained their humor throughout the series. Anything related to the Mishima (Evil) Industries and Kyusaku was priceless. Nuku Nuku's blunders were also always worth a chuckle or two, though they probably would have been really lousy if Megumi hadn't done the voice acting.

In the end, I really wouldn't recommend viewing this title. However, if you really enjoyed the original Nuku Nuku 6-episode OVA series, you might enjoy this. As for me, I still liked this one a lot more than the third Nuku Nuku series, All Purpose Cultural Catgirl Nuku Nuku DASH!.

Likes - Some parts are funny; Nuku Nuku carries the show
Dislikes - Terrible characters; no story; EVERY joke reused to death
