Blue Gender is one of those animes that just overpowers you with questions right off the bat. You are just like Yuji: dazed, confused, and possibly peeing your pants at the sight of Blue. Unfortunately, this continues throughout most of the show and we are left, dazed, confused, but thankfully we don't have any bladder problems. Questions arise throughout most of the series but are seldom answered. Questions that, had they been answered, could have propelled the story into greatness. Unfortunately, that just wasn't the case here.
The animation is a real problem in
Blue Gender. It seemed like the animators just couldn't decide on character designs, and throughout the show we're subjected to a change in character design in almost every scene. It starts to get a little better towards the end of the series, but it's really annoying when you see them look great one scene and all of a sudden the characters look really different/crappy.
The story, however, is quite solid for an action anime. In the beginning it's a little annoying thanks to Yuji's whiny personality. Marlene is also completely boring and emotionless for the first half, but that's completely intended and a huge part of the story... but it was a little hard to listen to her VERY monotonous voice for half of the series. Thankfully, the story really picks up a few episodes in when Yuji stops being such a dope and carries all the way to the abrupt ending which asks more questions than it answers. Questions like "What the hell is going on?" were constantly crossing my mind, and a re-watch of the last five episodes did not help answer it.
I would also like to mention that
Blue Gender is VERY graphic. It contains a lot of blood and a lot of nudity, so it might not be too good for those of you with weak stomachs. However, if you liked
Berserk, you'd definitely like
Blue Gender.
Likes - Great action sequences; interesting story
Dislikes - Ends abruptly; Many unanswered questions; shakey animation; VERY bloody
