For all of his life, Yuji has lived as a perfectly average person. That is, until he was diagnosed with a mysterious illness and had to be put to sleep until science has progressed far enough for there to be a cure for it. Now, it's seventeen years later and Yuji has mysteriously awaken from his slumber. When he ventures outside, he discovers that the world is not at all like he left it so long ago; it has been subjugated by a race of insects called the Blue.

Blue Gender is one of those animes that just overpowers you with questions right off the bat. You are just like Yuji: dazed, confused, and possibly peeing your pants at the sight of Blue. Unfortunately, this continues throughout most of the show and we are left, dazed, confused, but thankfully we don't have any bladder problems. Questions arise throughout most of the series but are seldom answered. Questions that, had they been answered, could have propelled the story into greatness. Unfortunately, that just wasn't the case here.

The animation is a real problem in Blue Gender. It seemed like the animators just couldn't decide on character designs, and throughout the show we're subjected to a change in character design in almost every scene. It starts to get a little better towards the end of the series, but it's really annoying when you see them look great one scene and all of a sudden the characters look really different/crappy.

The story, however, is quite solid for an action anime. In the beginning it's a little annoying thanks to Yuji's whiny personality. Marlene is also completely boring and emotionless for the first half, but that's completely intended and a huge part of the story... but it was a little hard to listen to her VERY monotonous voice for half of the series. Thankfully, the story really picks up a few episodes in when Yuji stops being such a dope and carries all the way to the abrupt ending which asks more questions than it answers. Questions like "What the hell is going on?" were constantly crossing my mind, and a re-watch of the last five episodes did not help answer it.

I would also like to mention that Blue Gender is VERY graphic. It contains a lot of blood and a lot of nudity, so it might not be too good for those of you with weak stomachs. However, if you liked Berserk, you'd definitely like Blue Gender.

Likes - Great action sequences; interesting story
Dislikes - Ends abruptly; Many unanswered questions; shakey animation; VERY bloody

4 oughtta 5?

No!

Japanese melodrama can get really bad and Blue Gender is a PERFECT example of that. In fact the only worse examples of Japanese melodrama cheese I can think of off the top of my head are all TV samurai dramas. *shudder*

Blue Gender is like a bad soap opera complete with bad acting, except with giant bugs and human dismemberment thrown in for good measure. If I want a bad sci-fi soap opera, I'll stick to X-Men comic books, thank you very much.

BLUE GENDER ROCKS IT HAS A GRREAT STORY LINE AND IT IS VERY UNDERSTANDIBLE FOR YUGI TO BE SCARED FOR THR FIRST 3 EPISODES EVEN IF IT DOES REALLY SUCK AND IT IS GOOD FOR THE STORY LINE THAT MARLEINE IS EMOSIONLISS.

ALL IN ALL i WOULDGIVE IT A 10 OUT OF 10

Well ive been a fan of Anime for about a year now, i guess i cant call myself an Otaku just yet. However i have a pretty big Anime collection now including Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion and more like Gundam Wing so i know what im talking about. Anyway to the point Blue Gender is actually one of my faves in my collection ive watched the series around 3 times now the first 2 episodes are annoying with Yuji's whining but come the 3rd episode the series starts to advance and the fight scene's get alot better then the previous episodes. I can recomend this Anime to any Mecha based Anime fan.

I gotta go with Underseer here, 4 is much too high. A lot of the episodes just seemed like filler to me. Another issue I had was I had just watched Bubblegum Crisis 2040 before this, and I saw a lot of similarities in spots. It's just that Bubblegum Crisis 2040 did it better.

Essentially, this is a badly done Starship Troopers rip-off with an ending so lack-luster that I can't even remember exactly how it ends.

Besides Tenchi Muyo, Blue Gender is 1 of the best freaking anime shows in the world!!!!! The story is very intresting some1 wakeing up and finding the whole world being taken over by gaint bugs. There's lots of action to keep u amused. Pretty much everyone dies except Yuji and Marlene but, hey it's due to the nature of the story. Plus there's intense romance between Yuji and Marlene, Boo yah!! They had a nice, juicy sence with Yuji and Marlene in episode 24 ( i like anime with romance in it)!!:) If u don't like Blue Gender, u r a whimp who can't stand a little gore. But, i wouldn't go get the Blue Gender movie. It's like the same story only w/ less romance plus, some stuff is cut out (wich sucks big time)! Anyway, rent it first, c if u like it. Then get the whole Blue Gender series. Turst me it's not a waste of money!!:)
