*looks at the female characters* Wow, they have some nice looking faces! *continues looking down* Wow, those are some big watermelons they have there! Wait a second... those aren't watermelons! Yes, that's right, Yamashita Toshinari has struck again! The same character designer behind such "masterpieces" as Amazing Nurse Nanako and Divergence EVE made his anime debut with Burn Up! W and as you can see from his latest works, his exaggerated designs haven't changed a bit.

Burn Up! W has that same brand of humor used in almost all fan service comedy series. There are a bunch of really sexy women that always get in some pretty humiliating situations. However, the creators of this anime decided to put a little twist on that formula. Not only are there sexy women getting in humiliating situations, but the women now guns and robots too! I found it pretty humorous, and predictable, that in this team of scantily-clad women wearing only the bare minimum, there was a perverted man who was always trying to peek up their miniskirts and see them naked. Of course, when he seems them half-naked, we see them half-naked too!

I'm normally not a big fan of fan service comedy, but I couldn't help but chuckle a few times over the course of Burn Up! W. It was probably caused by the fact that I was looking for something - anything - that could take my mind off of the horrible story. It's pretty much your standard evil-group-tries-to-take-over-the-world story, except that it constantly lost focus and seemed to never get the pacing right. In one episode, it takes about ten minutes for them to show Rio trying to sell her used underwear. Then it takes about ten seconds to introduce a major character, then it kills her off a couple of minutes later. I know her death was supposed to be a major emotional part of the story, but when you kill her two or three minutes after introducing her, it's just not going to work.

The lame characters in Burn Up! W don't make the viewing experience any easier on us. All of them are exactly what you'd expect them to be. We have a trigger-happy sniper with big breasts, a computer whiz with big breasts, a mecha-fanatic with big breasts, an emotional yet passion police officer... with big breasts, and a really perverted male police officer. Add to the mix a bunch of side characters... with big breasts, and you have the whole Burn Up! W cast right there. All of them have completely unoriginal personalities, and they're so boring that they don't lift the series at all.

I'd complain about the ending, had there actually been one. No effort is put into trying to finish up the story at all, and we're given some sort of subplot involving mind control in the last episode in an attempt to try to hijack the main story so we'll all forget about it. It didn't help one bit, and the whole mind control thing only managed to stall the inevitable. I'm hoping that Burn Up! X, the television series, will continue where this series left off.

Likes - Occasionally funny
Dislikes - No resolution; lame characters; pacing troubles

i thought this was quite good! i, being a fan of girls w/ guns, and i LOVED burn up excess, the tv "sequel" (sadly, the same story doesn't continue) thought this was extremely enjoyable. i don't hate fanservice at all, and i thought it was actually in place while watching this series. the animation was GREAT. pure eye candy, i mean the girls shoot guns, sparks, attacks, insanity, boing, *ahem*. anyway. i thought it was very well done, IF your just looking for some cheap entertainment. no deep plot, although it IS very interesting, the don't do anything w/ it, no character development. just a gun blazing well animated girls w/ guns action comedy. if thats what your looking for, have a GREAT time with this.
4/5

also, don't forget to watch the FAR SUPERIOR BURN UP EXCESS. (just get past the first 4 eps, and the plot gets really intence, complete w/ *some* character development, imagine that!"
