Chrono Trigger OVA
Genre(s):  Comedy
Released:  2003
Episodes:  1 OVA

It is the night of the Millenial Fair in the kingdom of Guardia. Elsewhere in the world, the Mystic Village of monsters is celebrating the new millenium as well. Cue the musical group Nuumamonjaa as they try to recruit monsters into their group. As they search for new group members, they'll run into familiar faces such as Johnny the weird robotic half-moped and Gonzalez the singing silver-points dispenser.

As far as RPG console games go, many will argue that Chrono Trigger is simply the best. However, nearly everyone that's played it can agree that it was one heck of a great game. Well, needless to say, I couldn't contain my excitement when I first discovered the Chrono Trigger OVA episode that was shown at FITcon 2003. I could only imagine what the game would be like in anime form.

Unfortunately, the OVA episode (which is also called "Time and Space Adventures: Nuumamonjaa") didn't deliver like I had hoped it would. However, rating an anime based on how well it lived up to how highly I hyped it is just something that I don't do. On the other hand, it's fairly obvious that this OVA episode was created solely for people who had played the game like many manga tribute OVAs (i.e. Time Stranger Kyoko). Out of fairness, I'm going to avoid letting my own personal bias get in the way and review this OVA in as much of a fair and objective way as I can.

For an OVA shown in 2003, the artwork quality is somewhat subpar. Luckily, the animation is fluid enough to make up for it, and all of the designs are pretty much ripped straight from the game itself. Another thing that's ripped straight from the game is the music, which is played rather irregularly throughout the episode and...

ARGH! Fairness and objectivity stinks!

In my opinion, the Chrono Trigger OVA was a big disappointment that only became better after I lightened up before watching it a second time. I loved the way the creators played the music in the episode, even though it was obviously only to produce some sort of nostalgic feeling in me. Each musical piece lasts for about five seconds, which, instead of nostalgia, produces an awkward feeling.

It's usually not my policy to review an OVA that is nothing more than a tribute to the game/OVA that it's based on (see the above example of Time Stranger Kyoko). However, since Chrono Trigger has such a massive following, I'm pretty much obligated to review the OVA. However, there is one thing missing from the OVA, something extremely important: the characters from Chrono Trigger. Oh sure, we can see the back of Crono and Lucca's heads, but that just wasn't enough to justify wasting 15 minutes of my time.

Although the two main characters in the OVA had a moment or two where they were enjoyable, the one that stole the show was Gonzalez, or Gato in the U.S. version of Chrono Trigger. Listening to his emotional song about the triumphs of warriors, his own personal strength - both physical and mental - and, of course, his awarding of silver points, brought a tear to my eye.

"Ah, Gonzalez! I am strong! Beat me up and get silver points!"

Likes - Gonzalez; nostalgia is nice
Dislikes - Everything else; Can't understand it without playing Chrono Trigger

I loved the game so I decided to watch this. Well...I've never been labeled 'slow' or 'stupid' but after this was over I was like, "What....?"
Before I knew it, it was over and I felt very disappointed.
Other than not making much sense, I did find some parts funny and even a bit entertaining.

"A GOLDEN SHOVEL!"

That was the only redeeming part of this anime for me. On the whole it just seemed pointless and uninteresting.

Hmm, not sure on this one. I enjoyed playing Chrono Trigger, but with a rating of 5 out of 10, it just seems a bit useless to get my hands on this one. I'm used to seeing a 7-10 score, and merely because they are good. Only seeing the back of Crono's head? That already sounds like a letdown. I guess I'll find something else.

I need to download this thing myself, but on DC++ (a program I use to get anime, along with Bit Torrent), I found what I at the time thought to be the complete Chrono Trigger OVA -- an intro, cutscenes, and an ending. The cutscenes involve some parts of the game (Frog blasting open the cave leading to Magus's tower, for instance). The intro is like the cutscenes except each scene is much shorter. Finally, the ending has stuff like Marle and Chrono's marriage, and Frog in human form walking with the army and Queen Leene. I'm off to download this OVA as soon as possible, because I *loved* Chrono, but we did see all the main characters in the three clips I mentioned above. My only complaint is that since it's drawn by Mr. Toriyama, all the male characters are really muscular.

Homunculus - Those are actually cutscenes from the Playstation remake of Chrono Trigger. The Chrono Trigger OVA is a completely different short movie.

Thanks Boney, I had no idea ^_^

This OVA is crap. It's just too disappointing. It made me chuckle every once in a while, but seriously.. It's such a waste of a golden opportunity to make an amazing adaption or side story to Chrono Trigger.

Reading this review yet again, and rememberin gthe horrible experience that was one of my first fansubs downloaded with BT *ever*... I am starting to entertain the idea that it would be overly amazing if they decided to release a CT/C anime in the next few years. But with the games dead... ehhhhh XD Although, are the rumours of the third CC just rumours?... or do they have a sense of fact?

A full-fledged TV series for Chrono Trigger would be absolutely fantastic - the game had such an incredible plot! But once we get around to that, we realize that there are lots of awesome old SNES RPGs that deserve TV series - FFs 4, 5, and 6 would all be great to watch; a ToP TV series would be amazing (although I'm enjoying the OVA quite a bit); Secret of Mana and SD3 would also be lots of fun...

So all we can do is dream...

Yeah, as HG said, so many RPGs of yesteryear could be flawlessly adapted into TV series if done correctly. I would want to see an Earthbound adaption! That would be the greatest epic comedy ever..
