Cosmopolitan Prayers OVA
Genre(s):  Fan Service, Stupid
Released:  2004
Episodes:  3 OVA

Koto is simply fanatic about her favorite video game character, Misuzu. When she hears that she's going to be going on a school trip to a place near a Misuzu convention, she can't help but cosplay. However, when she comes across a mysteriously "trendy" bracelet on the ground, she can't help but pick it up. Little does she know that her picking up that harmless-looking bracelet will send her on a mission to save the world.

I honestly can't believe I actually watched this. Apparently, I didn't get enough of the original series, Cosmopolitan Prayers (herein known as Cosprayers), so I decided to check out this OVA that was released along with the Cosprayers DVDs. Also, after watching Smash Hit!, the series that was created to basically make fun of how awful Cosprayers was, I had this strange feeling that these episodes would actually be GOOD. I mean, if M.O.E. knew the series stunk, and Smash Hit! "explained" why the episodes were cut and released only on DVD, it would make sense to believe the episodes would at least have some quality to them, right?

I was WRONG! These OVA episodes are the most mind-numbingly stupid filler episodes I've ever seen, bar none. What's more, M.O.E. decided to take advantage of the fact that these episodes weren't shown on television and bump the amount of fan service up another twenty notches or so. In the middle of the first episode, I shuddered when a tentacle monster appeared and tore Koto's clothes to shreds. I practically went comatose after watching the second episode, in which a hand puppet becomes sentient and starts lecturing its master. By the middle of the third episode, I was just about ready to play a satisfying game of Russian Roulette.

Being an OVA, the animation and artwork are a touch better than the television series. Not that I would know, of course. I was too busy trying to scrape the images out of my eyes with a hammer and chisel so I didn't really pay attention to the art quality a whole lot. The ending song, sung by the one and only Ayano Ahane (who also performed the ending themes for Smash Hit! and Love Love?), is just as good as it was in the series. However, new to the OVA episodes is the worst sounding opening movie that I've ever seen. Imagine, if you will, a theme song sung by the Cosprayers themselves. I shudder at the thought!

Thankfully, there is a single saving grace for the Cosprayers OVA series. The second episode, which is by far the biggest piece of crap I've ever had the misfortune to see, provided a bit of enlightenment regarding some of the events that occur in the television series. Of course, it being the nature of Cosmopolitan Prayers, a brief moment of enlightenment makes way for a glaring plot hole. M.O.E.'s solution to glaring plot holes has always been one thing: show the main character naked. Shazam!

As my eyes rolled over and over and over again from the utter stupidity of it all, I had to contain myself with these words that comfort me every time I utter them, "Boney, you can bash it as much as you want when you review it." After telling myself that, I received a boost of confidence. I then decided that, for the sake of saving whomever decides to read this review, I will save people so they don't have to suffer the same fate as I. So heed my warning, everyone. Don't watch the Cosmopolitan Prayers OVA!
