Divergence EVE
Genre(s):  Action, Fan Service, Futuristic, Mecha
Released:  2003
Episodes:  13 TV

The year is 2317 and the Earth is having huge overpopulation problems. Space colonies have been created throughout the solar system in hopes of alleviating the problem a bit, but the people of Earth were pushing further and further past the solar system. That is, until one expedition came across a cross-universe portal and built a space station at the other end called Watcher's Nest. However, the space station is soon attacked by strange creatures that are called Ghouls. The pilots that were fighting the Ghouls mysteriously disappeared, and the Ghouls have been dormant ever since. What are the ghouls, and what happened to the original pilots of the Watcher's Nest?

Whoa! Did I just watch Vandread: First Stage again or is it just me? Fan service, a main character with a very, very mysterious background that's tied to the ship in some way the he/she doesn't know, more fan service, a really, really crappy ending, and even MORE fan service - that's what you'll find in Divergence EVE. It didn't even feel like the creators tried to make an ending for this. Episode 13 just ends and I was sitting here pondering the significance of everything until I saw "Come back again in 2004!" or something like that.

Brought to us by the creators of Amazing Nurse Nanako, you should probably know what to expect from the visuals. "Excellent character designs" is not a phrase that's synonymous with the name Yamashita Toshinari, who is the character designer of both Amazing Nurse Nanako and Burn Up! W. Thankfully, like his usual work, the male anatomy is drawn very well and it's only the females that have er... exaggerated proportions.

The story behind Divergence EVE is incredible, though. The backstory is good, and the way things happen is intriguing and I always wanted to learn more. Unfortunately, the way the series was set up was rather idiotic. The 12th episode is shown as the first episode, and then you have to watch it again once you finish the eleventh episode. Add to this that each episode feels like it's completely rushed. It's like they tried to fit a huge story into thirteen episodes, then when they get to the last episode they just sit down and say, "Aw, screw it. Let's just make a second season." Divergence EVE definitely didn't have the pacing of a series that has two seasons.

Another problem I had with the series was the ending credits. Imagine this scenario: a bunch of people just died, some had their memory erased, and everybody on the space station is crying. What do you expect now? That's right! Just like I'm sure you expected, they show Misaki dancing around in almost nothing with an incredibly lighthearted, upbeat song playing in the background, effectively ignoring anything that was established in the episode. If they wanted to show off as many breasts as possible, they could have just replayed the opening credits which not only has more fitting music, but also shows the measurements along with each female character's breasts. Let's not just show off Misaki's assets, mmkay?

Likes - Intriguing story; excellent backstory
Dislikes - Too much fan service; entire series feels rushed
