El Hazard: The Magnificent World 2
Genre(s):  Drama
Released:  1997
Episodes:  4 OVA

It's been a while since Makoto last saw Ifurita go alone to stop the Eye of God, but that hasn't stopped him from continuing his work to discover a way to get back into his world to meet her. Not all is sad, however. After a drunken proposal, Miz is finally going to be getting married to Fujisawa. There is one little problem, though. The groom has escaped to pursue his dream of journeying throughout the world, climbing every mountain. While the gang searches far and wide for Fujisawa, Jinnai comes across a demon by the name of Kalia and awakens her. Stranger things occur, especially when the gang crash lands in a forest and come across Ifurita...

El Hazard: The Magnificent World 2 is not actually a sequel to the original El Hazard series, but rather it takes place in the middle of the last episode of El Hazard during the period of time after Ifurita goes into the Eye of God. It's a little confusing at first but you quickly get to know when this all takes place.

El Hazard: The Magnificent World 2 (MW2) is about as useless a sequel as sequels could possibly be. I'm surprised myself that I actually gave it a 3.0 rating. I'm really not sure if it deserved such praise. Not everything was bad, however. There were certainly a lot of good parts to it.

The new characters introduced in this series are probably the most intriguing I've seen in El Hazard. The demon-god, Kalia, for instance, has a deep and engrossing history that is unfortunately cut short. Just when we're finally getting some insight into her past, the series ends and we're left with nothing more. The same exact thing could be said about the Ifurita that appears and the man that lives with her. He allegedly comes from another world and has the same powers as Makoto, but we don't learn a single thing more about him. There is even less information about Ifurita in this series as it just simply stops providing background information for her as soon as the first episode ends. The only development that happens between the two is in the last 3 or 4 seconds of the last episode (literally). It's nice to finally get some revelations into their relationship but it was too little, too late.

Unfortunately, you shouldn't watch this show if you want anything to actually progress with the main characters as well. Nothing new happens between them with the exception of Fatora's introduction in the show (she was the girl Makoto was impersonating in the first series). However, her goal in the show is just to provide as much comedy relief in the show as possible. It's too bad none of it was actually funny. The new character designs are pretty "bleh" too. Makoto's design alienated me the most because he looked terrible. Shayla-Shayla also suffered a case of bad designing but it only lasted a couple of episodes.

The music is also standard El Hazard fare. By that I mean it's terrible, but I won't get much deeper into that. The animation quality is a huge improvement though. Movements are far more fluid and the environments and colors are a lot more vivid.

I won't say too much about the ending, but it was really anti-climactic. It just ended in probably the worst possible way I've ever seen. Think Gunnm-quality ending and you'll know what I mean. Still, if you've seen El Hazard and you want to know what's going on after Ifurita leaves, then I would suggest watching this. It also tells us what happens prior to El Hazard: The Alternative World, which is a slightly better series.

Likes - New characters; story
Dislikes - Abrupt ending; no character development; cruddy new character designs
