Fruits Basket
Genre(s):  Comedy, Drama, Romance
Released:  2001
Episodes:  26 TV

Honda Tohru, having lost her mother in a car accident, she has come to live alone in a tent in the forest near her school. Never a quitter, she strives to honor her mother's memory and work hard to do the best she can with her life. One day, she happens across a house in the woods, not far from her makeshift abode. The residents, Souma Yuki and his cousin Shigure are always talking about the Chinese Zodiac (Juunishi). When Souma Kyou comes to fight with Yuki, Tohru tries to stop him by holding him back. However, the Souma family has been cursed by the vengeful spirits of the Juunishi and they will transform whenever "hugged" with a member of the opposite sex. Thus, Kyou turns into a cat, Yuki turns into a mouse, and Shigure turns into a dog. Can Tohru keep the secret of the Souma family safe?

At last! An anime that effortlessly combines comedy AND plot! Well, the story revolves entirely around one plot device, but it just works so well: all of the Souma that are possessed by the Juunishi transform into animals. The situations that this creates are just so hilarious and original, that I'm having a very difficult time writing this review because it's just so difficult with the amount that goes on in Fruits Basket.

But, alas, Fruits Basket has quite a few flaws in it. The main character's voice gets a little annoying at times and there are waaaay too many characters to keep track of. Introduced to us are nearly all of the animals of the chinese zodiac as well as schoolmates, family members of both Tohru AND the Souma family (not all of them are Juunishi). This makes remembering names very difficult for me :\

Likes - Makes fun of its own flaws; interesting, yet basic, plot; great characters; the ending
Dislikes - Those dang bishounen crossdressers!; Momiji; Two of the Juunishi aren't introduced

Hmm, what to say about Fruits Basket, what to say indeed... Well for starters, the name has a specific meaning to it. It actually comes from the game she played as a child. However, she was always the onigiri (rice ball), and thus was always left out because nobody ever called for the onigiri. However, now that she is with the Souma family, she feels like she finally belongs with somebody. She is finally included in her own "fruits basket".*

The thing that really sets it apart from all the others are is the originality of the plot. I mean how many animes have a girl who lives in the woods because her mother died, and ends up living with a family who can turn into animals when the opposite sex touches them??!! Well the story does sound bizarre but it's actually quite interesting to watch, and see how one girl can fit into the family after she learns their secret.

Some early animations weren't so good, but improved as the series moved on. Besides that, every thing else is just fine. The sound is catchy, specially the intro (you'll find your self humming to it after a while.) Character development is key in this anime, because that is what it mostly focus's on. So basically I would recommend this anime to any one who likes to be fuzzy with out the wuzzy ~_~.

*Thanks to BJF for the real meaning of the this anime tittle.*

Fruits Basket is great, definitly one of my favourites. I loved all the characters, and the story developes nicely. One little thing from the last review here that I'd like to point out: The name comes from the game Honda used to play with her classmates, called Fruits basket, and she always was the riceball, the one that didn't belong in the group of children, who all had the names of fruits in the game.

I just read about FRUITS BASKET in an anime magazine and that made me very curious to buy the whole series. And I'm very much happy to have bought it because the series was worth my money. It is funny at the same time heartwarming.

I was really touch in the stories of Tohru, Momiji, Kyo, Kisa and most especially Hatori. It may be hard to turn into animals because people might avoid you. The series kind of letting the viewers get the message on how a person feels when she or he is being avoided because she or he is different. In simple term, it is DISCRIMINATION which is very true nowadays.

I really liked the series and also the opening song of it because it pretty much describes the whole series. It is a good series and definitely worth watching.

I liked this series alot. I found most of the characters hilarious! I LOVE Yuki's animal form! he's sooooooooo cute! I like the opening song, it's pretty! Tohru and Yuki should get together!!! Sure he turns into a rat when "huggled" but sez who she has to?! anyways, I haven't seen the whole series yet but I will eventually! I have all subbed episodes (however I don't have all of the episodes available) and from the few that I have, I rate Fruits Basket as 4.5 out of 5!

Most anime feature a morality story of some sort. This anime contains several and serves them up to you with an abundance of comedy and cuteness. Fruits Basket is much more than the art, animation, and starry-eyed bishounen. Shows like this are why I appreciate anime, in general. Great reviews.

I really love the Fruits Basket episodes from the great combination of humor and seriousness in the plot, the characters and their funny personalities, as well as the amazingly touching lessons conveyed to the audience. There's something about this anime that is really touching, although I won't spoil any of that good stuff. Just watch and enjoy it as I did! Trust me, you'll LOVE it!
