Ghost in the Shell
Genre(s):  Action, Futuristic, Robots, Thinker
Released:  1995
Episodes:  Movie

In the year 2029, unaugmented humans are a rarity and cybernetics has run rampant. Nearly every person in the police and special forces is a cyborg, and Motoko is no exception. Artificially created by the government, the only part of her that's actually human is her brain. It is because of the fragments of a human brain that she begins to question her own life, something that is very unusual for a cyborg. However, now a new type of intelligence has begun to wreak havoc across the globe. This new intelligence is neither man nor machine...

Quite possibly the second most over-hyped anime of all time (following the tracks of Akira), I finally had a chance to watch it all the way through. Yes, I had many chances to watch it through in the past, but I kept falling asleep midway! Now, at last, I've seen the ending to this. At last, I can review it.

The themes and story of Ghost in the Shell are probably some of its better points. Cyborgs questioning their purpose in life is a slightly cliché theme, but it's done surprisingly well in this movie. The story also contains a couple of twists, and at no point in the movie could I have said "I know what's going to happen". It was also very thought-provoking on my part because of how all of the information was handed to us. No clear definitions were given for things like the "ghosts", and I had to make my own conclusions on many things in order to really understand what was going on. The dark, futuristic background also helped set the mood for the story, though the lack of color and dull, boring environments didn't really spark much excitement from me.

The animation is also really good. When I watched this movie, I could hardly believe that it was made in 1995. Animation has gone a long way since then, but Ghost in the Shell is definitely still a competitor. Smooth movements, excellent computer animation, and pretty cool looking character designs are shown throughout the movie. However, the music was pretty lame and pretty much consisted of two songs. The song played in the opening credits is played not once, not twice, but thrice over the course of the movie, and there wasn't really any other music played during the movie. The ending credits had a song with a pretty awkward techno sound to it and I didn't like it at all.

Unfortunately, there's a reason why I always fell asleep while watching this movie: the voice acting and the dialogue stinks. In both the american and japanese versions, the voices are monotonous, unemotional, and ultimately boring to listen to. Long periods of time pass in between the action sequences that are over far too quickly and are completely one-sided. After said action sequences, we're treated to listening to the characters talking in their boring voices for another half hour. The pacing to this movie is also slow as molasses and only picks up in the last few minutes before slowing down to a snail's pace again.

The ending is anticlimactic and riddled with unanswered questions. Many, many things aren't resolved in it and its only purpose seems like it was made to open up another can of worms. Characters that are introduced throughout the movie also get no closure at all, and they all seem to disappear off the face of the Earth as soon as the 2/3 mark of the movie passes by. In the last couple of minutes of the movie, I finally managed to get a little excited and I couldn't wait to see how everything would turn out. Then it just ended so abruptly and in such a confusing manner too.

Likes - Intriguing story; good animation
Dislikes - Boring dialogue; cruddy music; anticlimactic ending

This review was pathetic!...Just kidding! I of course disagree with many points (as to be expected), but I wouldn't have rated it much higher. Maybe as high as 4/5 if I was in a good mood. Ghost in the Shell is highly acclaimed for raising the bar in full length anime. As was mentioned, it is hard to believe this was created when it was. The animation and graphics were all groundbreaking, and ushered in (along with Evangelion) a new era in high quality anime. What this movie suffers from is the same problems that akira had. Being based on a large manga. This results in the need to cut out many (and I mean MANY) important hunks of story to squeese a movie into 2 hours. Alot of the confusion and questions rises from this. I'll watch it again sometime soon and see if I still feel I can give it a 4.Ravlen

LOL! I must say i agree with Ghost in the Shell and Akira being overrated. And yes, i also remember the voice-acting as being rather dull!

But, the graphics are really nice, and i actually like the way the entire move sometimes simply slows down and "breathes" for a moment, Mamoru Oshii-style. I'd probably have given it 4. But probably not more than that.

PS: People who like Ghost In The Shell, go check out Patlabor The Movie! :)

Bah Ghost in the Shell is a good Movie, and at the time of its Release there was nothing like it same with Akira the Animation to both was top notch for its time. If you dont like the film to much then watch the series " Stand Alone Complex ". It has nothing to do with the Movie so perhaps you'll enjoy it.

Well i must say I agree with you there. Yes I think it's overhyped and overrated, and the dialogue was certainly monotonous. Good review. :)

BJF is right on target with the review. The animation WAS incredible. I liked the whole tone and color of the movie... -- how it could be the afternoon and still seem...dark. As for the dialogue, I remember thinking to myself several times, "Oh god, will he/she ever shut up!" It was so bad that I could hardly focus on what they were saying. *sigh* It was terrible judgement on the director/producer's part. Accurate review, BJF, keep it up!
