Good Morning Call
Genre(s):  Comedy, Romance
Released:  2001
Episodes:  1 OVA

It's been over a year since Hisashi and Nao started living together in the same apartment after a paperwork mistake. Now, they have become a couple because of this mistake and are as happy as could be. Hisashi's birthday is quickly approaching now and he's been getting a little anxious waiting for Nao to give him something. However, he's been seeing Nao with another, more handsome man lately and she hasn't been around the house quite as often as she normally is.

Now that you've finished reading the synopsis, I bet you're pretty confident that you know exactly how the story is going to turn out. Well, I'm here to say that I am both ashamed and delighted that I did not correctly predict how Good Morning Call would turn out. I'm ashamed because, dang it, I'm usually right on the money with these kinds of things. I'm delighted not only because it turned out differently than I expected it to, but it actually exceeded my expectations of how enjoyable it would all be. Phew! It's a good thing I was wrong.

One area where Good Morning Call really excels is in its comedy. Through a use of super-deformed characters that is rivalled only by Dragon Half, this one-episode OVA really makes sure that we laugh. Intertwined in this comedy is a sweet romance story that, as I said before, beat my predictions to a pulp.

However, there are many more elements to an anime than story and humor that are equally, if not more important. I'm of course referring to characters in an anime. Characters move the plot forward and are the real reason to watch an anime. Unfortunately, to me the characters really failed to deliver in Good Morning Call.

First, there far too many of them in the episode, giving me the impression that I'd be completely lost because I hadn't read the manga. Characters are introduced and then leave, obviously relying on the viewer's knowledge of the manga so it doesn't have to actually develop them. It felt like they were simply cameos for the characters from the manga, and that's something I just didn't care for. With all of the characters thrown in, only two side characters actually received some development, and I really couldn't care for them any less than I do.

Second, the voice acting was, in my opinion, below average the whole time. I didn't think Hisashi's voice fit his age at all, and Nao was simply annoying. Every time she raised her voice it grated on my nerves. When she wasn't shrieking, she was alternating between overacting and giving an emotionless performance. The background music didn't really help much either. It was occasionally pretty good, but most of the time it was just generic subpar anime music.

Even though the characters got on my nerves, I still really liked Good Morning Call. It's a short, sweet one-episode OVA that left me with a smile on my face. If you've read the manga, you should probably watch this. If you haven't, then the rating of 3.75 that I gave this is aimed at people like you!

Likes - Very funny; story outwitted me
