I've heard so much about
Gunbound these past few weeks/months. Most of the things I've heard have led me to believe that
Gunbound was amazing, that it was some mystical game that would unite old Worms veterans with the new generation of computer gamers. Well, reality is a harsh mistress and I was forced to abandon my fantasy world the moment I signed up.
The signup process began without a hitch. Among other options, this is where you choose whether or not you want to be a male or female in the game. I, being a complete psychopath, chose to be female in the world of
Gunbound. That was the first mistake I made when I signed up to play. You see,
Gunbound is a freeware online game. That means that it is available to everyone, and I mean EVERYONE.
Now, having so many people concentrated in one game can be both a blessing and an annoyance. On one hand, there is never a shortage of players to battle with. Games and servers fill up quickly, and I fairly easily found seven other players to hang out with and have four-on-four battles. On the other hand, due to the fact that everyone and their mother is able to play
Gunbound without paying a cent, the maturity/intelligence level of the playerbase is among the lowest I have ever witnessed in an online game.
Remember how I said that choosing a female avatar was the first mistake I made in the signup process? Well, that's because about 95% of the player base is completely male - young, pubescent males who had nothing better to do than spend half of the battles trying to hit on me and asking me to cyber. The other 5% of the player base is made up of arrogant, pompous jerks that call themselves "pros". I always thought that pros had some sort of chivalry about them, but instead of saying "nice try" when I missed a big shot, they would instead spam me with "fukin newbie".
Enough about the player base, let's talk about the gameplay! As many other people have said,
Gunbound is remarkably similar to the concept that drove Worms. The only difference is that it's not quite as over-the-top as Worms was. The battles flow smoothly and, if you're lucky, almost completely lagless. If you're not lucky, the battles still flow smoothly except that players who lag seem to be randomly ejected from the game. For some bizarre reason, teams that lose a player due to lag are further penalized by having a life taken away from the team. To make a long story short: don't lag out or your team will die a slow, painful death.
However, I'd say that the game gave me a pretty decent experience overall. It's imaginative, very customizable, and above all, fun. If you're looking for a game that's exactly like Worms, look elsewhere. If you're looking for something that comes pretty darn close, I'd recommend you try
Gunbound at least once.
Likes - Interesting battles; imaginative weaponry
Dislikes - Aggravating player base; no JUMPING?!
