Gunnm: Battle Angel Alita
Genre(s):  Action, Futuristic, Robots
Released:  1993
Episodes:  2 OVA

In the distant future exists a world where the rich live on a plateau suspended above the earth and everybody else lives in the slums beneath (think Midgar in FFVII). The plateau, Zalum, regularly dispenses its trash into the world below where the people scavenge for anything useful. A cybernetics doctor by the name of Ido discovers the remains of a person in the trash who is miraculously alive. Ido builds this woman a new cybernetic body and names her Gally. Gally, seeking answers to her past which she can't remember, signs herself up as a bounty hunter to find answers.

As you can see from the synopsis, Gunnm is your standard "person loses memory, fights bad guys to regain memory". I'll get right to the point: Gunnm is an anime that feels like it was rushed right out the door. It has a very ambitious plot that falls flat on its face, and ending that disappoints, and almost no character development. Yes, I know it's a 2-episode anime but that's no excuse to not have a good ending. Another gripe I have deals with character relationships. When a character confesses their love, we should be feeling happiness. In this, I just felt "uh.. okay. Who's he again?" I won't spoil the ending, but I will tell you to not get your hopes up.

There have got to be positives to this, right? Yes, definitely. The plot, as I said, is very ambitious and I was excited to the very end to discover the secrets of Gally's past and why she fell from Zalum. No luck, though. Nothing is explained. I haven't witnessed something like this since the abomination that was the Spiral ending.

Another positive is the animation style. It's dark, gritty, gloomy, and depressing. It effortlessly shows us the melancholic life of the people living in the slums and really provides so much detail. If you've seen Kite you might know what I'm talking about although this is really on a whole new level above that.

In the end, Gunnm is an anime that you should watch just for the experience. It'll give you a whole new perspective on a lot of things, but if you want something that is really deep and emotional you should look elsewhere.

Likes - Ambitious plot; animation style; concept showed promise
Dislikes - Overambitious plot; ending is teh suq

I rented this from a video store years ago. At the time, I thought it was awesome (back then, I didn't have much experience in anime). I mean, the animation, the artwork, the whole mood of the anime was all done very well. But, that's really all it had going for it.
