The World is a game which has spread to the four corners of the world and has become the most successful MMORPG of all time. Minase Mai decides to try it with her boyfriend Kasumi who plays regularly under a character by the name of Barmunk (Balmung?). However, when they begin playing they both fall unconscious. Mai awakes in the hospital by Kasumi, who has not yet regain consciousness. Because she is the only case to have ever recovered from this strange condition, she is pursued by ex-CC company (The World dev team) member Totuoka in a search for an answer to why Kasumi and several others are still playing the game despite being unconscious...

Alright, I'm going to be honest here. LIMINALITY is the first anime where I've actually fallen asleep. TWICE. I was so bored out of my mind I could barely finish it. It consists of nothing more than characters talking for the entire length of the four 45-minute episodes without us actually finding out anything new. There are a total of four central characters in liminality, as well as three minor characters. Not much, you'd think they'd be well developed, right? Wrong. You have Mai and Totuoka who are well developed in the first episode but lose all momentum in the others. All we know about Yuki is that one of her friends is comatose from the game (we're given hints that it's Orca), and then there's Kyo who is just some lady that pops up but hangs out with them for some reason and has really huge... tracks of land.

The first episode was a very well-done showing. Great character development and relationships and it really makes you think. Then you get to episode two which introduces two characters out of nowhere, the sleep-a-thon that is episode 3, and the "ending" that is episode 4. Not really much of an ending. After all of this time, we only learn less than what was given to us in SIGN and DUSK.

It can't all be bad, right? Right! The music is up to the phenomonally high standards of Kajiura Yuki who has done music for such series as Noir, hack//SIGN, and the Kimagura Orange Road movies. Absolutely fantastic pieces are run throughout. Also, the plot has a sort of "underlying complexity" to. If you've never seen a .hack series, you won't get any of this. If you have seen a .hack series, you should watch this series nevertheless. You should watch this especially if you've played any of the games. Each episode coincides with one of the games. If I can get my hands on the four games I'd probably have enjoyed this much more, but seeing as how The Underwear Drawer of Fortune only contains around $5, not much chance of THAT happening.

Likes - Plot; music
Dislikes - Everything else

The idea of having anime correlate with their corresponding games is quite unique, but an anime should be an anime, having a true ending and story, not something that urges you to buy the game to find out more. I can stress the rather unfinished feel of an ending in .Hack//Sign, which leaves me to ask where Sora has gone. Only then, I do some research to find that he is freed from the Skeith/Skieth in one of the games. But maybe I need to give it credit for its worth. So, I'm a bit hesitant on watching this one. :(
