A gigantic, impenetrable, unscalable wall surrounds the city of (forgot the name... think it's "Jiru" though), where man and Haibane have learned to co-exist. In the home of the Haibane, Old Home, a cocoon has appeared. In it, a young girl dreams of falling with crows as she is hatching from her cocoon. She is named Rakka after her dream (Rakka = To Fall). However, she begins to question the true nature of the haibane, the purpose of the wall, the crows, and her own past. When she discovers the truth about her friend Kuu and her Day of Raising, she begins to doubt the teachings of the Haibane.

This anime, another work of Abe Yoshitoshi (creator of Lain and others), really had me expecting something much more deep than this. This anime could have easily been the best I've ever seen, if it had just been a few more episodes longer to EXPLAIN. This anime is so riddled with plot holes and loose ends that it's hard to get everything. Add to that the ending doesn't explain ANYTHING except for why Reki is so grumpy all the time. The ending isn't bad per se, but it's not great either. None of the questions I posed in the synopsis are ever answered. We're still left wondering why there are so many crows, what the haibane are, what the wall is for, what happened in Rakka's past, etc. I sure hope they make another season of this (a la Mahoromatic) to clear up some of the things here. Now that I've listed the negatives, on to the postives. This anime just has so much character development and Rakka is just such a great character overall. But why the thinker as the genre? Well lemme tell you: this anime has more symbolism than ANY anime I've ever seen. The ash falling from Reki's cigarette in slow motion, a crow crapping on Rana, everything has some sort of deep importance that you should somehow comprehend in order to get the most out of the series. Also, the animation and music in this series is AMAZING. Not good, not great, above that on a whole new level. Just watch the clip of the opening sequence. The whole anime is just as well animated as that.

Likes - Rakka and Reki are great characters; original and fantastic concept; potential for a great plot; music and animation on a whole new level
Dislikes - The plot went so far but fumbled close to the end zone; too many plot holes.

I personally fell in love with this series around the time of episode 7 or so. Before that it is slow, literally brings up hundreds of questions to answer, and of course, by the end... Answers none of them.

Normally, that would bug me... However, something about the charm in this anime really attached me too it. I thought the ending was absolutely perfect for the show, it had a decent climax. (Something that would seem impossible considering the earlier episodes)
A climax that could make people rethink their very values of life and death, which I believe was most important lesson in the show.

When i finished the show, i was stunned by the beauty of it, I think that ABe was trying to show that, despite all of the questions in life (by opening up all of those questions in the first half) By the end of it all, they're just not important. Its what you do in life that matters, no reason to beat yourself up over stuff that doesn't really matter.

This anime didn't impress me. SO much praise went into it I thought I'd be enlightened afterwards. Well, that just goes to show that you shouldn't listen to the masses. I liked this anime. But, when it was over, I was confused because everyone had made it out to be something that it isn't. What bothered me most was that there's a whole lot of emotion present, hidden and obvious, and you can tell that the producer really wanted you to feel it, too. But, you just don't and it's really disappointing.
