Hellsing
Genre(s):  Action

Episodes:  13 TV

In England exists an anti-undead organization called Hellsing which is run by Lady Integral Hellsing. The purpose of Hellsing is the eradication of vampires and ghouls. The top vampire hunter in Hellsing is, ironically enough, a gun-toting vampire by the name of Alucard.

Anime based on vampire hunting is a rather abundant genre, and there are almost as many about vampires hunting vampires. Heck, there are more supernatural force hunting supernatural force animes than you can shake a stick at. Hellsing, however, manages to transcend many of those others with its style alone. Sporting almost no plot whatsoever, Hellsing feasts on its characters. Alucard, Ceres, Integral, etc. are all fantastic characters with interesting personalities. The fight scenes are also very well animated, but some are somewhat boring. Since absolutely no enemy stands a chance against Alucard, the fights with him in them are exciting because of the moves he performs effortlessly to finish his enemy off in an instant, not because of the choreography or anything like that.

The subplot involving Ceres slow transformation into a full vampire kept me hooked throughout. Other than that though, there really isn't much substance at all and... ack! I hoped I could get through this without mentioning the plot, but I just can't help it. There is just so much potential... hopefully the planned second season will solve all of my questions.

Likes - Stylin'!; Interesting Characters; Splendid fight scenes
Dislikes - No substance; fights are one-sided

My all-time favorite of the vampire anime subgenre, and rightly so. So VERY stylish...the only anime I've seen that even comes close to matching it in this capacity is Cowboy Bebop...Not too terribly original, but I really enjoy how they made the references to Bram Stoker's Dracula, and not just make it about "vampires" in general. This way, it adds a bit of authenticity that a lot of other vampire anime lack. The soundtrack is so very solid...lots of varied styles, and quite seamlessly blended into the action. Sure there's not too much plot, but it's easy to ignore the fact that the story doesn't progress too much when you're so busy thinking "Alucard is so friggin awesome"

A note on the fights being one-sided... I really didn't think ALL of them were that one-sided. The fights with Anderson were a little more evenly matched, and the battle with Incognito in my opinion was quite even until the very end.
I also cannot wait until the second season...I loved the ending for the first season, so I hope they don't screw it up with the followups.

Ahh, yes. Alucard is so friggin' amazing! As for Season 2, it will supposedly follow the manga from the point it left off, so Hellsing will find out about Millenium, and... whippee! Unfortunately, the producers say they won't make it until the manga's over. And while the manga's amazing in and of itself, it'll be so much better animated!
