For this review I'm going to do something completely different. Below is a real, unedited transcript of what was said as I watched
Jungle De Ikou, followed by the actual review.
"Hmm... interesting jungle music being played."
"Hey, what's that guy doing?"
"Ah, it's some kind of jungle relic."
"An opening! I'll let it go while I get some snacks."
*BoneyJellyfish goes off to get snacks and comes back with the opening over*
"The episode title is 'Ongo'? What's that mean?"
"Woah! That girl can jump."
"Hey, that's Ranma's voice! Teehee!"
"Argh! A close-up panty shot of a 10-year-old!"
"What did she get a black eye from?"
"Ah, so the father was in Papua New Guinea. That's where the jungle was."
"More panty shots of the little girl?!"
"He's giving her that relic he found in the jungle..."
"Weird dream... is that a mailbox?"
"Is that... is that old guy wearing a penis sheath and rubbing his nipples?"
"Okay, I did NOT want to see that!"
"THAT'S Ongo? He's just a little kid!"
"What's he doing to that table?"
"Woah! A giant whale!"
"Hey, she's doing what that old man did..."
"OH DEAR GOD WHAT HAPPENED TO HER CHEST?!"
"..."

And that's what happened as I watched the first episode of
Jungle De Ikou, and wasn't suprised to see most of the same things in both the second and third episodes. The director, Moriyama Yuji, is the same one behind
Agent Aika and
Futari Ecchi, so you probably know what to expect from
Jungle De Ikou just from that alone.
Jungle De Ikou is really an anime that knows its place in the anime world, and doesn't really dare to take any risks or attempt anything new to change what it is. That being said,
Jungle De Ikou is a lot like what you would get if you combined
Mouse with
Ranma 1/2. I say that because not only does it have as much fan service and breasts as Mouse, but it also has the voice of Ranma from
Ranma 1/2.
Okay, okay, so that's not the only thing it borrows from
Ranma 1/2.
Jungle De Ikou is basically about Natsumi becoming cursed and then subsequently having to battle... things by turning into a spirit of flowers called Mii. Okay, so it's not really a whole lot like
Ranma 1/2 so much as it's like any other magical girl anime, but dangit, it's always been my dream to compare a plot device to that of the
Ranma series!
Anyway, the story in
Jungle De Ikou is established remarkably quickly, leaving about 3/4 of the entire series up to the task of making us laugh until the bizarre, yet boring, conclusion to the series. I won't go into details about the story, at least no more than what I've already said in the synopsis, but I will say that for an anime completely dedicated to jokes about the size of Mii's breasts, the story is surprisingly well developed and thought out. I think it's safe to say that I'll probably never see another anime about the jungle gods of Papua New Guinea. However, there's really only one intended audience for
Jungle De Ikou, and that's the same audience that enjoyed such series as
Eiken and
Mouse, and the people who watch this knowing what it's about (something I didn't know) will most likely forget all about the story by the time Natsumi first transforms into Mii by performing a dance that ends with some sort of pseudo-orgasm. If only I had watched the opening movie...

The comedy is what you'd expect from any anime that revolves around fan service. Though most of the jokes involve the showing of men getting nosebleeds whenever Mii is around, I actually found some of the comedy to be *gasp* funny! What I found particularly amusing was the very silly dance that Natsumi was forced to perform (Nami's dance, on the other hand, was just WRONG), at least up until the er... "climax" of the dance. However, what I found most funny were all of the jokes that had nothing at all to do with Mii. There was more originality in those jokes, and they were far less forced than, "Hey! Look! Her bra fell off! HAR DEE HAR HAR!".
Another thing is that for an anime created in 1997, the animation is easily as fluid as some of the more recent works that are done entirely on computers... even though it's all concentrated around the elasticity of a certain part of the female anatomy. I found the character desings to be rather ugly, and their personalities were equally terrible. The characters in
Jungle De Ikou are some of the most boring, uninspired characters I've ever seen, each one as flat and boring as the last (with maybe the exception of the various jungle gods). The voice acting was equally unimpressive, though thankfully it wasn't really bad by any means.
So, in conclusion, if you liked
Mouse or
Eiken, or if you simply like to stare at wallpapers featuring the girls from
Divergence EVE,
Jungle De Ikou is the perfect anime for you to watch. It's short, it may be funny for you, and it has women with large boobies. If that kind of thing isn't your cup of tea, then stay as far away from
Jungle De Ikou as possible.
Likes - Occasionally funny; more story than usual
Dislikes - Fan service gets excessive at points
