What a nice, pleasant movie this was. I'm not entirely sure if this actually took place or just a Chinese legend, but I'm leaning towards reality. Because this movie was made in 1990, the animation and sound are certainly not up to par to today's standards, but like
Grave of the Fireflies, it has aged fairly well. The animation is quite fluid and realistic, but Ginga's voice irritated me a little. It sounds like she has a small lisp. The plot is nothing spectacular, it's similar to the story of Cinderella, except that Ginga achieves everything out of her own power and not by magic. I was a little disappointed by the ending, though. Not enough of a relationship was developed between the emperor and Ginga. Ginga, however, is a very good character. Eccentric and curious, she pulled this movie out of what would have been very mediocre.
Likes - Has a nice charm to it; fluid animation; Ginga; Basic, yet well done plot; Nice, unexpected ending
Dislikes - Not much character development; ends abruptly; Ginga's voice
