NieA_7
Genre(s):  Comedy, Drama
Released:  2000
Episodes:  13 TV

It has been a long time since a large ship descended upon the small town of Enohana. So long, in fact, that very few people seem to care about aliens living in their once peaceful town and the crashed mother ship is just part of the scenery. One person does care, though. Her name is Mayuko, a poverty-stricken student and has one of these aliens, NieA, living in her closet. NieA is constantly leeching the little food she works hard to buy and makes spacecraft out of garbage. Being in the "under seven" class of aliens (which is lower than the lowest class humanity knows of), NieA has no antenna and is an outcast in a race of outcasts.

Another anime series by Yoshitoshi Abe (Lain, Haibane Renmei), NieA_7(pronounced knee-ah under seven) is almost the polar opposite of Lain. NieA_7 can appeal to just about every anime fan (except for the hentai anime fans, of course). On the surface it is a comedic trip with a basic storyline, but to people who can recognize symbolism and have deciphered Lain, it is a very deep anime full of metaphors and symbolism, much like Haibane Renmei. There are a few little quibbles I have at this series, unfortunately. The first thing I want to know is er... ANYTHING about the aliens. They play a central role in the series (the majority of the characters are aliens), yet there is absolutely no information about them nor any information about NieA_7. The plot, while deep and pretty good, just manifests one plot hole after another. Very deep plot holes :)

The comedic aspect of NieA_7 is very well done. I haven't laughed that hard since watching Fruits Basket. Another thing to note is the intro sequence. It is the most bizarre song I've ever heard. Ever. You think you know bizarre? You have no idea what bizarre is until you've heard the intro music. Then, of course, there's the episode preview which features a funny looking indian guy that's obviously a parody of an alien from the series. He tells these corny jokes that nobody would find funny, and most indians would probably find offensive. The ending music, however, is very good.

Likes - Eeeeenteresting!; ...original intro music to say the least
Dislikes - Plot Holes, plot holes, roly poly plot holes; total lack of information on the aliens

I enjoyed NieA_7 a fair bit, shame that none of the episodes were as great a quality as the "rival bath-house" one.

I personally view NieA_7 as a stepping stone in his career, it was necessary for him to make Haibane Renmei.

The whole "Everyday Life" aspect of niea is why i think he left out a clear conclusion, which, though kinda depressing to the viewer, seems to give the impression that the characters are going to continue on the same path even when you are no longer watching the show.

One of the episodes endings, I think it was episode 7, where the Indian guy shows a picture that someone sent to the show of Niea cracked me up. It says F*ck you on it and looks so sh*tty... and the Indian guy says that Indians are disappointed.
