The Rurouni Kenshin movie (also called Samurai X in the US) was quite a disappointment for me. It contained one of the most linear plots I've ever seen. For instance, you see the "bad guy" in the first scene of the movie and, surprise surprise, Kenshin fights him in the end. The fight scenes, which are the series' high points, are very short in the movie and all three are almost exactly the same. Kenshin blocks an attack, jumps into the air, then finishes the guy off. All three fight scenes end exactly that way.

From a technical standpoint, the movie does pretty well. The animation, while vibrant and colorful, is low quality for a movie. The music, however, is very well done. The only complaint I have about the music is that it NEVER ENDS. Even when it feels like there should be silence, we hear some melancholic music. There aren't many tracks either, so you'll just be listening to the same music for much of the whole film.

The story, although linear, is quite intriguing. Yes, it is your standard "you killed my boss so I'll kill you" revenge story. There are some twists, but those are expected and don't really provide any surprise. The "bad guy" is actually a pretty interesting character. He's the only character in the movie that's fleshed out and developed and so we actually feel for him.

Likes - Nice, emotional music; colorful artwork; interesting "bad guy"
Dislikes - Too linear; the music goes on and on; low quality animation for a movie

I loved this movie. The music yes was not very good but the plot was very interesting. It shows the ending days of the Tokugawa Regime along with the beinging of the meiji era. Both great for history referals

i didnt quite like this movie even though i do own it but kaoru, kenshin, yahiko, and sanosuke's voices are really gay and they sound weird would not reccomend it to anyone but who knows that is my opinion but the fighting was really good so this would be the right show for guys.

its crap compared to the ova of kenshin's past in my opinion

Well, I really can't put my finger on this one. I saw this thinking that the action lever was going to be on par with scenes from the TV show or from the 6 OVA/OAV's, but I came out a bit disappointed. The english dubbing was awful. It seemed Yahiko had a voice change, Sanosuke's voice seems to have gotten higher, and Kenshin became too much of a pacifist.

More drawbacks is the repetitive scene where Kenshin kills Gentatsu over and over again, so instead of feeling for Kenshin's sin or that other guy, we really would want it to end. Unlike the TV show, we see that they tried to translate the Hiten Mitsurugi styles into english. So when the action scenes took place, you can ridiculously hear them calling out 'VERY' long attack techniques. Kenshin refused to fight him, yet ended up getting badly beaten up. It would have been nice if he fought with full strength and rendered him unconscious, but sadly, it was not to be.

Adding more, Saitou barely made his mark, appearing a few times to talk to Kenshin and to kill the traitor in the end. He was the reason why it made a higher rating at least. Although I must say, the show is so-so, a bit least on what you would expect on the superb storylines in the OAV's and TV show. So this is optional for you to watch, you won't miss anything at all if you don't.
