Serial Experiments: Lain
Genre(s):  Drama, School, Thinker
Released:  1998
Episodes:  13 TV

Iwakura Lain is just a quiet, mysterious girl in her 8th-grade class. She lives every day of her life in a drab, dull existence. That is, until the day everybody in her school receives an e-mail from a student that commited suicide a week earlier. All of the other students just pass it off as a prank, but something about it intrigues Lain. Seeking the truth of the e-mail, Lain convinces her father to buy her a new computer so she can connect to the Wired and discover what's really going on.

Another 13-episode outing by Yoshitoshi Abe, Lain is easily the most brain-challenging series I've ever watched. You are bombarded with many questions throughout the series, but the most prevalent is "WTF just happened?!". Lain, like Revolutionary Girl Utena, is just one of those anime series that requires a second watch just to figure everything out. Lain is just so loaded with symbolism, plot twists, metaphors, and a totally original premise. The plot in Lain is great, with a very sad but still great ending.

However, not all is well in the land of Lain. The most unfortunate casualty of Yoshitoshi Abe's anime series are always the characters. Lain doesn't differ from this course. Dull, monotonous characters receive no development in Lain. Even many of the major characters seem to just be there to take up space. NieA_7 had the aliens, Haibane Renmei had every character, and now Lain has everybody but Arisu and Lain. It's not a pretty picture.

Likes - Deep, deep, deep... pl--- *questions existence of self*
Dislikes - Shallow characters

A decent review but you could go into a little more detail
about specific parts of the series such as music
[preformed by BOA], The style of artwork [much like the Digimon Movie released in NA], and such not-so-interesting-but-good-to-know facts [or as I like to call them 'NSIBGTKF']

Actually i think there's a reason why some of the characters do not develop at all. And Lain does develop. But the plot is mind-bending. Actually, even though i don't understand everything that happens, this is still one of my favorite anime series! Nice soundtrack too.

Chibidusk always tries to do what he shouldn't do.

Lain is a good anime, really enjoyed it. Didn't have to watch it a second time to understand it though, am I smarter than average now?

Neko Koneko: No, you are just better at watching anime. I propose the theory that there is a difference.
