Slayers Excellent
Genre(s):  Comedy
Released:  1998
Episodes:  3 OVA

Lina Inverse is a sorceress that's always traveled by herself. That is, until a rather loud sorceress by the name of Naga the Serpent burns down the inn she was staying at and ruined not only her deluxe beef meal, but also all of her luggage. Naga, Lina's greatest "rival", has decided to travel with Lina in order to catch her off guard and best her some day. Unfortunately, the townspeople want compensation for the inn so they have charged the two with the task of traveling into an old labyrinth to rescue some teenagers that have mysteriously disappeared shortly after venturing into it.

One of two OVA series created with the Slayers name, Excellent is pretty much exactly the same as the other OVA, Slayers: Book of Spells. It's even the same length, running on approximately three 30-minute episodes. However, the thing that's always great about a Slayers series is that it's never taxing on the brain and can be pretty funny. Excellent is no exception to that.

The three episodes are self-contained with a tiny thread holding the second and third episodes together. In my opinion, the third episode is definitely the best of the three, and I'd have to say that the second one is certainly the most difficult to watch. Naga's laugh is is okay in small doses, but when you have it be the main focus of an entire episode it just gets painful. For much of that episode I was watching the minutes go by on my clock.

Like most Slayers features, the animation isn't anything spectacular but it's still a bit above the three series. The music isn't really anything special but, like the animation, music isn't exactly a staple of the Slayers movies and specials either.

Likes - Occasionally funny; third episode
Dislikes - Naga's laugh gets very, very annoying; second episode
