Slayers Return
Genre(s):  Comedy
Released:  1996
Episodes:  Movie

Two years before Lina Inverse first met with Gourry, she was traveling with her on-again-off-again sidekick Naga the Serpent. A strange mix, indeed. Lina, a flat chested yet magically endowed sorceress traveling with Naga, a well endowed yet weaker sorceress? In this adventure, Lina and Naga are once again found stuffing their faces in a totally random village. However, a rather ominous group of bandits have plagued the town and Lina has been given the task of disposing of them. They seem just like any normal bandits, until they unearth an immense weapon that was created long ago. How will Lina save the town from this weapon that seems to be invulnerable to all magic?

Slayers Return, or "number 2" as I like to call it, is the second and worst of all of the Slayers movies for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that the plot is just awful. It tries to gain some momentum throughout the movie but in the end it loses to the attempts at comedy and eventually just serves as a way to get a couple of cheap gags in. It was a real shame because it could have been a good method of getting some information in about the War of the Monsters 1000 years earlier.

The second is that there just aren't a lot of funny parts in Slayers Return. You can tell it really tries hard to be funny but maybe it just tries too hard because I didn't find myself laughing very often. However Slayers Return does have one thing going for it: it has the best action scenes of any of the Slayers movies. The action scenes aren't taken very seriously, like most things that happen in the Slayers series, but they are still done pretty well. The ending to Slayers Return is pretty bizarre, and it involves a monstrous golem, a giant turtle made of orichalcon, and a lot of hearts.

Slayers Return also sports a bit better animation than we saw in Slayers Perfect, but it's not really that much better despite being made a year later. The music is pretty subpar, but the voice acting in Slayers Return is a bit better than some of the other movies. It's not on the level that it was during the series, but it's above average.

Likes - Occasionally worth a chuckle; good action scenes
Dislikes - "Plot" fails miserably

I've only seen the orignal Slayers TV (will see Next as soon as possible) and none of the other movies except for this one, but I found it pretty funny. That's probably *because* I haven't seen the other movies, but I liked it.
