Someday's Dreamers, or Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Kato, is a series that manages to accomplish exactly what it sets out to do. It tries to answer the question "If mages existed in the world as we know it, what would it be like?". It manages to answer this with flying colors, though the execution of such a story may turn many off.
The story in
Someday's Dreamers moves about as quickly as paint dries, which left me bored in quite a few areas. You see, except for the last couple of episodes every episode is almost entirely filler with about 5 minutes tacked on to the end for story.
However, all of those 5 minutes finally add up in the end where it really counts and provides us a moving experience that is worth the wait. The music adds to the experience with some truly great tracks that I have repeating in winamp all too often along with my new favorite, Chijou no Seiza from
Fushigi Yuugi Eikouden. :)
Unfortunately, the characters that live in this world are what bring down much of
Someday's Dreamers. Characters that could have become so much more interesting, such as Yume's mother or the director of the magic department, are given almost no screen time at all and even less information is provided about them. Yume's mother, for instance, is considered to be a world-famous mage but to Yume she just appears to be a normal old woman. What did she do that was so great? Why was Yume put with Oyamada, a world-class teacher?
Character personalities are also dull. Angela, who is voiced by Wakanabe Akino of
Witch Hunter Robin fame (she played Robin), feels totally out of place in
Someday's Dreamers. Her ominous and emotionless voice may have worked wonders in previous projects, but in such an anime as this it really doesn't fit at all. Also, every character's development is put on hold until the last couple of episodes, where we're suddenly assaulted with information about everybody. Fortunately, it's done in a manner that is easy to understand.
If you've ever seen the anime
Piano before, then you're pretty much in for the same ride. The only difference, obviously, is that
Piano is about a piano player.
Likes - Moving story; fantastic music
Dislikes - Boring characters; most episodes are filler; nonexistant character information
