Visions of Escaflowne
Genre(s):  Action, Drama, Mecha, Romance
Released:  1996
Episodes:  26 TV

Hitomi is just a regular girl who has a penchant for fortune telling with tarot cards. She is usually just playing around, but then she begins to have strange visions , dreams clearly not taking place on Earth. She thinks nothing of it, until one night when she is getting timed by the captain of her track team. There, a pillar of light forms and she sees a strangely dressed man attempting to slay a dragon, the same man and situation from her visions.

I didn't really do a great synopsis, but saying any more would spoil the beginning, which is really good. Many things were left out, such as her pendant which is a very key item that pretty much moves the entire plot along. Speaking of the plot, the plot ROCKS. Love story, action, revelations into human nature, plot twists galore, and it actually requires you to THINK. The action is actually very well animated, and the mecha designs are also top-notch. The animation style will turn away many, however. It's very different from what you might be used to.

By the way, Hitomi is the main character, and she's a wonderfully developed character. Voiced by the great Sakamoto Maaya, Hitomi was a character always full of emotion, thanks not only to her voice actress but to the great cast of characters which complement her. In fact, all of the characters are very good. If you haven't watched this before, Escaflowne is the name of Van's mech. Oh, and another thing: cat girls are present. Any anime with cat girls automatically earns a 5.0 from me. As an added bonus, the cat girls are TWINS! (note: all cat girls are moderately dressed. No fan service is present!)

Likes - Everything...well... except for the...
Dislikes - slightly unsatisfying ending that takes place after the credits in the last episode.

I watched this series on TV about 3-4 years ago.
I really enjoyed it, and I don't often like animes featuring robots/mechs. Nice mix of fantasy to keep me interested, I also loved the music and suspense.
If I ever get the chance I might watch the Japanese version. To anyone who hasn't seen it, I HIGHLY reccomend it.

Wow. I've been watching this series on DVD for the last two months or so whenver I would find time, and I watched episodes 21 through 26 last night all in a row... this is undoubtedly a perfect anime. It took its time introducing the world and characters, but once it picked up, it never slowed down. Contrary to what Boney said about the ending, I thought it was both beautiful and perfect. For once, the ending is ambiguity done right.

And Yoko Kanno gets yet another big check in my book.
