Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou OVA 2
Genre(s):  Robots, Slice of Life
Released:  2002
Episodes:  2 OVA

In the not so distant future, androids are commonplace and the earth has been almost completely covered by water. The only places left for humans to live on what were once hills. However, all of this has not seemed to affect people at all and humans and robots alike are just continuing their lives like nothing happened. One such robot is Alpha who works at a café owned by somebody known only as "Owner". Owner left one day, leaving Alpha to tend the café alone. To where did he go? How long will he be gone? Alpha doesn't know the answers to those questions, but she is glad she is a robot. Since she is a robot, she will always be waiting. However, a large typhoon has just hit Japan and it has left the café in shambles. With nothing left for her in the country, she has decided to venture out and see as much of the world as she can.

The followup to first OVA of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, the second one does anything but wrap up the story. All of the characters we knew and love from the first series are back. From Alpha to the Oji-san to the mail carrier, we get to see them all once again. However, this second OVA can certainly be seen even if you haven't watched the first.

This picks up right where the first one left off: Alpha is wandering around with her new camera and taking pictures of the things she observes. Fans of the original will have to adjust a bit to the new character designs though. There's not that much of a difference except that they were all made a bit more "cutesy" looking.

The story for Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou OVA 2 is a bit more serious than the first one, although the first OVA was pretty dang serious too. Unfortunately, the ending is very similar to the first OVA. Similar in that there isn't an ending at all. It just... stops. I really wish they could have shown us what happened to the Owner. All we know is that he's still alive somewhere but that was told to us in the first series.

The atmosphere, like the first OVA, is absolutely fantastic. Instead of just being centered around the café, this OVA begins around the café and then Alpha starts to travel throughout the flooded Japan. Every few minutes is a new refreshing scenery change. My only wish for the anime was that more could have been done between Nye and Alpha.

Likes - Great, new atmosphere; music; characters
Dislikes - Not the stellar ending I was hoping for

The anime version obviously was supposed have more episodes, since it follows the manga version for a little while, then siddenly stops after episode 2. It does capture some of the atmosphere from the original manga version, but i think it spends a little too much time filming Alpha's butt and breasts. This seems like a slight misinterpretation of the original.

If you ever get the chance to read the printed version, do it - and you'll see how catching it is. The plot just keeps surprising you a little all the time, and the art-work is superb, which the anime version was only able to keep up with to a certain extend.
